Course structure

This postgraduate masters degree can be studied full-time or part-time.

To be awarded the MSc, you must obtain 180 M-level credits: 60 credits through the completion of your masters dissertation, 80 credits from compulsory modules and 40 credits from semester 1 and semester 2 option modules.

Areas of study

Core modules 

• Engineering Management
  This module uses a real time and problem based approach to develop the capabilities required to evaluate and apply management and professional techniques which support the development of new and innovative products and services.
• Supply Chain Management
  You build your knowledge of the complexities of logistics and supply chains and their management, providing a broad strategy view of supply chain management.
• Major Team Project
  Small teams of students work to produce a solution to a complex engineering problem. Leadership, management, and team working skills are developed. The teams investigate the field in which their problem is set, produce outlines for a number of possible solutions, and select the most appropriate in terms of technical and business viability. They will then need to develop the selected solution to prove its validity.
• Masters Dissertation
  The dissertation project allows students to engage in independent research in engineering and to demonstrate their capacity for critical thinking and development of innovative solutions through understanding and application of advanced engineering concepts.
• Industrial Placement
  This module provides the student with an opportunity to undertake work experience for an extended period within an organisation relevant to their possible future career, enabling them to reflect and develop their general skills. The student will spend a minimum of 40 weeks in an organisation that is likely to be relevant to their future career.

Option modules*

Semester 1

• Data Visualisation and Analysis
  This module is designed to provide students with the knowledge of statistical foundations and computer programming underlying data analysis. Computer simulations in R will be used to explore the nature of random processes. Students will apply their new knowledge to complete a realistic data analysis project.
• Environmental Impact Assessment
  Through examining the principles behind, and the practice of, environmental impact assessment (EIA) you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the EIA process and appreciation of the theoretical and practical process of EIA in engineering scenarios.
• Renewable Energy Technologies
  This module will prepare students in subjects related to renewable technologies in industry. The module will major on both PV and Biomass technologies as this is where the department has strongest industrial links and experience.

Semester 2

• Professional Development
  The aim of this module is to support your development as independent learners within the engineering profession; to select, plan and study for a project or career-related design subject on a topic of your choice.
• Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Data
  In this module students learn to understand, select and apply a range of data analysis and machine learning methods for turning raw data into useful information and ultimately knowledge that provides a solid basis for operational and other decisions that arise within diverse professional contexts.

I have spent most of my life in industry. Having started in the Royal Navy and then through a range of consultancy roles I have been lucky enough to experience a variety of diverse types of engineering and ways of getting things done. This journey has impressed upon me the merits of not only being technically competent, but in having the vision and creativity to establish what needs to be done; and the implementation skills, competencies and behaviours to have the best chance of actually achieving the end result.

As we advance technically it is expected that the next few years will deliver societal benefits in diverse areas such as the food chain, water, energy, waste management and health care. It is clear that studying engineering provides competencies that are not only pivotal to delivering these societal changes, but will also be required in larger amounts.

My advice to students is to explore the wealth of knowledge that exists and strive for excellence during your time at the university. I would also advise you to be kind. Kindness and decency in how you deal with others in delivering projects can be just as important as your technical ability.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2024–25.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or RPI (whichever is higher).

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.
