Intro

Our foundation courses are integrated with an honours degree, enabling you to spend a year developing the knowledge and skills needed before you start your degree with us. They are a great opportunity if you do not have the required A-levels or equivalent qualification, are changing career or returning to study.

As well as gaining academic knowledge of the principles of business and law, you'll explore the fundamentals of applied numeracy and data handling, life skills, citizenship and how to prepare yourself for studying your honours degree at Brighton.

Successful completion of the foundation means that you can continue your studies with us by choosing to progress to one of our accounting, finance or economics degrees (you'll find them listed on this page). The course team will help you to decide which degree is best for you.

Course content

What is a foundation year? 

A degree with an integrated foundation is designed for students who do not have the entry requirements needed to start a degree with us. This could be because you don't have the grades or subjects that we need, or you could be changing career or returning to study. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, you can progress to one of our BSc(Hons) courses, depending on which foundation year pathway you choose.

This means that your course will take four years instead of three (or five with a placement year). Our foundation is a great introduction to your chosen subject area, and the opportunity to develop valuable study and self-management skills, communication, teamwork and problem-solving techniques which help to build your confidence and prepare you for the rest of your course.

At the School of Business and Law we offer three integrated foundation year courses. If you successfully pass the foundation year, you can progress directly onto your choice of degree from those listed below without having to reapply through UCAS. UK students will also be able to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree, or a four-year degree with placement year.

Our integrated foundation courses

Foundation year syllabus

You'll complete four modules in the foundation year. They will allow you to explore accounting, finance and economics concepts and theories in a business context, developing a strong understanding of the principles. You'll develop the transferable skills that are essential for study at degree level, and explore the relationship between theory and practice and how this relates to debates and issues in business.

Learning will be through a mixture of lectures, small group teaching in workshops and seminars, private study and course work. You'll be supported throughout by your personal tutor.

Modules

  • Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills

    This module will help you to make practical decisions in the business world and to come up with solutions to business problems. You'll work on your core arithmetic, algebra, statistics, mathematical modelling and probability skills, building your ability to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts.

  • Introduction to Wellbeing and Study Success

    This module introduces study skills and concepts of wellbeing to students who are new to higher education. Using the data handling skills explored in the Applied Numeracy and Data Handling Skills module, you'll take part in a practical group project on the broad theme of wellbeing and personal/academic development.

  • Academic Knowledge for Accounting, Finance and Economics

    This module equips prospective accounting, finance and economics students with the foundation skills for academic study. You'll be introduced to the core principles of accounting, finance and economics and have opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in practice. You'll also explore the meaning and application of financial and economic terminology, academic writing and research skills that are essential to your academic development.

  • Developing Practical Professional Knowledge

    You'll develop law, business, accounting, finance or economics knowledge through by working on an individual project themed around responsible enterprise. You'll develop confidence in your ability to use the study skills you have learned during your foundation year, and reflect on the experience and on how it has contributed to your preparation for degree studies.

Rageshree Sinha (Shree)

Shree is a lecturer in entrepreneurship in the School of Business and Law.

Her research studies the role of absorptive capacity to enable labour efficiency as new and emerging technologies are being implemented in the market.

Apart from being an active researcher, she also worked with the  project which was a £1.3m research project, funded by the European Structural Investment Fund and Arts Council England. It aims to provide technology SMEs, creative arts practitioners and cultural organisations supported and authorised access to Gatwick Airport’s big data. For both DRIVA and Nuffield Project she has worked as a Research Fellow for Data Science and Visualisation.

Shree has significantly contributed to the university's RISE project, our Help to Grow course and the Inclusivity and Partnership Project.

She brings rich and valuable experience in data analytics and business intelligence skills. Shree enjoys teaching on various modules in the School of Business and Law, alongside her active research work. She's eager to supervise students working on management perspectives of new technologies and implementation challenges.

Successful completion of the foundation year means that you can progress to one of our degree courses.

Many of our graduates go on to complete professional exams with the major accountancy bodies and, in time, to be chartered accountants. Others pursue careers as bankers, corporate treasurers, financial advisers, traders, investment analysts and stockbrokers.

Our courses also open up career options in non-financial organisations that rely on experts in accounting and finance. The skills learned on your degree can be used to move into roles such as general management, banking and insurance, where financial expertise will give you an advantage.

Work-related experience 

Our dedicated Placements and Employability team provide a huge portfolio of employers offering business-related placement opportunities. They support all students find a placement.

They offer several services to improve your employability including CV and cover letter reviews, mock assessment centres, fast-track interviews and interview practice sessions.

They will also support you throughout your placement and act as referees.

We are one of the first UK universities to use JobTeaser, a new online placements system presenting placement options in the UK and Europe. It gathers together all the job opportunities, events and resources you need to help you with your professional development.

Placement and recruitment events
Placement fairs are held twice a year involving companies from well-known names such as Enterprise-Rent-a-Car, Nike, BMW and IBM, through to smaller and more local businesses.

Course fees

UK (full-time) 9,250 GBP

International (full-time) 15,900 GBP

Students applying for this course will be eligible to apply for student funding for their whole course – foundation year plus either a three-year degree or a four year degree with placement year.

Fee information for this course for 2025 entry will be updated here no later than December 2024.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2024–25.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or RPI (whichever is higher).

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that are included and any extras that you may be expected to pay while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For the International Tourism Management BSc, International Tourism Management with Marketing BSc, International Event Management BSc, and International Event Management with Marketing BSc, field trips are an optional activity, but we do strongly advise participation as they contribute to the overall experience of studying this degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students, however please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum and don't anticipate the total cost of a few field trips each year to exceed £30. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Moulsecoomb campus

Two miles north of Brighton seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you'll find new Students' Union, events venue, and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our halls, Moulsecoomb Place and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains and to all the exciting things happening in our home city.

  • Mithras Halls are stylish new high-rises in the heart of the student village at our revitalised Moulsecoomb campus with ensuite rooms for more than 800 students.
  • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.
