On-campus residential summer schools

Our on-campus residential summer schools offer you the chance to try out what it’s like studying at university. You will get a chance to explore varied sessions during the day to give you a taste of different courses, social activities in the evening, and overnight stays in our halls of residence – all supported by our undergraduate students at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯.

By the end of the week, you’ll have tried out lots of different tasters in your broad area of interest, made new friends and have a much better idea of what it’s like to move to university!

For students who meet our widening participation criteria we are able to arrange and pay for train travel to and from our summer schools.

Art and design

Based at our City campus, students will explore a wide range of different art and design disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Art and design subjects taught at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ include:

  • digital fashion
  • ceramics
  • games
  • art and design
  • photography.

Also receive top tips on your portfolio and free studio time. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Business and law

Based at our Moulsecoomb campus, students choose either a business or law pathway and explore a wide range of different business and law disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Subjects including:

  • social purpose marketing
  • campaign creation
  • copy creative and content
  • intellectual property
  • advertising standards.

Working in groups and given a brief you will plan and prep and pitch your ideas to the group. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Health professions

Based at our Falmer campus, students will explore a wide range of different healthcare disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Healthcare subjects taught at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ include:

  • radiography
  • paramedic science
  • medicine
  • physiotherapy
  • midwifery
  • nursing
  • podiatry
  • occupational therapy.

Explore clinical suites and learn from students currently studying different healthcare courses. Students are offered a first aid training session as part of the summer school. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Humanities and social science

Based at our Moulsecoomb campus, students will choose either a humanities or social science pathway and explore a wide range of different humanities disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Humanities subjects taught at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ include:

  • criminology
  • psychology
  • sociology
  • literature
  • politics
  • counselling.

The summer school will also consist of visits to local places of interest. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Science and engineering

Based at our Moulsecoomb campus, students will chose either a science or engineering pathway, and explore a wide range of different science and engineering disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Science and engineering subjects taught at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ include:

  • biology
  • biomedical science
  • computing
  • engineering
  • architecture.

Also included is a visit to Herstmonceux observatory centre. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Sport

Based at our Falmer campus, students will explore a wide range of different sport disciplines delivered by talented academic staff and current university students.

Sport subjects taught at the Ογ½ΆΦ±²₯ include:

  • exercise, health and rehabilitation science
  • sport coaching
  • sport management
  • strength and conditioning
  • PE with QTS
  • sport and exercise science.

Also included is a visit to the AMEX stadium. Alongside academic sessions, outreach staff will deliver advice and guidance sessions on making a strong application to university.

Overview

What to expect in the daytime

You'll take part in a programme of workshops and academic sessions in the subject you’ve chosen. Some you will have considered, and some might be completely new to you. Depending on your chosen subject, you might visit a gallery, build something in our engineering labs, visit the local hospital, test yourself in our sports science labs or take part in a philosophical debate – we promise you won’t get bored!

What to expect in the evenings

In the evenings you’ll get to try out what it’s like living in ‘halls’ – you’ll have your own bedroom, in a flat with 6–8 other students also on the summer school, and a shared living room/kitchen.

There will be social activities each evening, for example, beach volleyball, quizzes and BBQs.

How much does it cost?

Nothing! All summer schools are completely free to take part in and include accommodation, meals, and the costs of any trips you take part in.

Who can attend?

Applications from all students will be considered, however, places are limited so we will give priority to students in year 12 who meet our widening participation criteria. The closing date for applications is 31 May.
