Our courses

Undergraduate

Our law degrees will prepare you for a legal career, as well as develop a broad range of skills in analysis, logical reasoning and critical thinking – all highly sought after in many careers.

Each of our LLB courses will provide you with the Foundations of Legal Knowledge modules required by the Bar Standards Board for becoming a barrister, and a solid basis of legal knowledge for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) 1 for becoming a solicitor.

We also offer an Law (Canadian Law) LLB(Hons) undergraduate degree aimed at Canadian students wanting to study in the UK, or those wishing to cross-qualify in England, Wales and Canada.

Postgraduate

Our LLM Law Conversion is designed to support a career transition to legal practice. More specifically, the course is of direct relevance to anyone wishing to work as a solicitor or barrister. The LLM is structured around the foundations of legal knowledge, providing you with a solid base in your preparation for the academic training required by the Bar Standards Board and the Solicitor’s Qualifying Exam. Throughout your studies you'll have the opportunity to develop practical legal skills including mooting, client interviewing and negotiation.

Our LLM in International Law and Social Justice LLM provides a unique insight into issues of distinct contemporary relevance. Building on the specialist expertise and research of Brighton Law School academics, this course invites participants to examine topics such as healthcare, migration, and corporate crime through both a legal and theoretical lens.

Our LLM Law Conversion and International Law and Justice LLM are eligible for the government’s postgraduate loan scheme.

PhD courses

Brighton Law school is an exciting and engaging environment for PhD researchers. The expertise of Brighton’s academic staff spans a range of contemporary specialisms, from the overlap between business and human rights, to the role of international law in obtaining climate justice.

As a PhD researcher at Brighton, not only will you benefit from professional and supportive academic supervision, but you can also take advantage of a thriving research environment. You'll be able to participate in research workshops and work-in-progress seminars where you can receive constructive feedback and benefit from the full range of expertise at your disposal. Brighton Law School also offers PhD workshops designed to help progress your research career.

Our approach

Brighton Law School is a supportive environment – we want students to feel able to be themselves and bring their creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm for law to class.

We teach using a variety of approaches, including large lectures, small group seminars and workshops, with an emphasis on critically discussing and understanding the law.

Our lecturers ensure you develop an in-depth and critical understanding of the subjects you study. Course content reflects current leading research and legal practice – addressing traditional legal subjects such as criminal law and contract law, and more specialist subjects such as media and sports law, animal rights law, environmental law, plus innovative modules in FinTech law.

If you choose to study LLB Law with Criminology or LLB Law with Business, you'll have the chance to specialise in modules that develop your skills and knowledge beyond the law.

Law in practice

Practical legal skills

Our course content and extra-curricular activities are designed to develop your practical legal skills through activities such as mooting, client interviewing and negotiations.

You can also get involved in our pro bono legal clinic to gain qualifying law experience.

Our pro-bono legal clinic offers a free and confidential advice service to members of the community on a range of legal issues including social welfare, employment disputes and gender discrimination.

You can choose to volunteer during your final-year at undergraduate level, or during your postgraduate study.

The Law, Society and Justice (LawSoJust) Research and Enterprise Group brings together academics from law and related social science disciplines who are active in the fields of social justice and accountability.

The group provides a support network for research activities in this area.
