According to Cancer Research UK, there will be 28 million new cases of cancer worldwide each year by 2040.
Cancer is a highly stressful disease and uncontrollable chronic stress impacts our quality of life. Professor Flint has established a translational research programme contributing to our understanding of the link between stress hormones and cancer at the molecular level. Drawing on over 25 years’ research, she explains how stress is a key contributor to cancer and, crucially, discusses ways that this can be mitigated. Her work has shown that the release of stress hormones affects how our disease may progress, spread and suppress our all-important immune system.
She will also demonstrate that exploring the role of stress on disease is important when considering treatments such as chemo and immune therapies. Furthermore, she reflects on her passion for mentoring and how this can contribute to research.
