Expert supervision
Every doctoral student is supported by a dedicated, fully trained supervisory team, usually of two academics.
Postgraduate researcher development training
We offer workshops to support the professional and skills development of our doctoral students, including academic language training for students whose first language isn't English.
Progression support
From research plan to viva, our workshops and specialist staff guide students through the major milestones of their PhD.
Doctoral student community
Our vibrant research environment offers numerous opportunities for students to connect with their peers, such as online inductions, research seminars, reading groups, informal networking and support groups.
Conference funding
All (self-funded) doctoral researchers are eligible to apply for one grant per year to support conference attendance.
Research networks
Many of our students are aligned to our specialist research centres and both within and outside of their disciplinary school; all departments have strong connections to regional, national and international research networks.

Flexible research study for everyone
Around one third of our doctoral researchers study part-time, with students from a wide range of backgrounds joining us in their 20s through to their 60s.
