What is the hidden link between stress and cancer? The first inaugural lecture for this academic year at the 香蕉直播 aims to shed light on the impact of stress responses on the progression and treatment of the disease.

Join Melanie Flint, Professor of Stress and Cancer Research and co-director of the , on Wednesday 4 December when she explores how chronic stress impacts quality of life and its link to cancer.

According to Cancer Research UK, there will be 28 million new cases of cancer worldwide each year by 2040. Drawing on over 25 years’ research, Professor Flint will explain how stress is a key contributor to cancer and, crucially, will discuss ways that this can be mitigated. Her work has shown that the release of stress hormones affects how disease may progress, spread and suppress our all-important immune system. She will also demonstrate that exploring the role of stress on disease is important when considering treatments such as chemo and immune therapies.

Professor Flint’s inaugural lecture takes place during Global Challenges Week at the university, celebrating the exceptional work of staff and students to address major global issues, including enhancing wellbeing, tackling climate change, improving equality and inclusivity and promoting creative and sustainable economies.

Delivered by newly appointed professors, inaugural lectures delve into the pioneering research Brighton academics are carrying out to improve understanding of diverse subjects and address challenges facing people and communities in Brighton, across the UK and around the world. Lectures also give insights into how academics become experts in their chosen field.

The lectures are free to attend, and open to staff, students and the general public – but booking is essential. A reception follows each lecture where conversations can continue informally with people from across the university and the wider community.
