For two weeks every November, CINECITY brings the best in world cinema to Brighton and the south coast with a festival programme of premieres and previews, artists’ cinema and installations, treasures from the archive, live soundtracks, talks and special events.

This year's festival opens and closes with a first chance to see two highly anticipated titles.

On 11 November, there's a special preview of She Said directed by Maria Schrader, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as the New York Times journalists whose investigation revealed the extent of Harvey Weinstein’s serial abuse – events which helped kickstart the global #MeToo movement.

On 20 November, the festival closes with a screening of Empire of Light directed by Sam Mendes – a love letter to the collective experience of cinema. Olivia Colman stars as the manager of a 1980s south coast cinema (scheduled for UK nationwide release on 13 January 2023).

There are also premieres of feature films from directors based in Brighton & Hove, such as Elliott Hasler’s debut Vindication Swim – an engaging biopic of pioneering Brighton swimmer Mercedes Gleitze, who became the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1927.

The Nettle Dress, meanwhile, is Dylan Howitt's exploration of the work of Brighton-based textile artist Allan Brown, who spent seven years creating a dress from nettles foraged on the South Downs. The film was described by Sir Mark Rylance as "exquisite".

Other special programmes in the festival include a feast of inspiring debut films in Best Of British, plus the Brighton Screendance Festival - a celebration of dance on film in collaboration with the city's newly-opened centre.

Untold Archive Stories, meanwhile, will highlight discoveries by TV documentary producer/director Barney Snow based on his exploration of the dazzling film collections at the 香蕉直播’s Screen Archive South East.

The film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors will form part of a special Ukraine cultural programme at CINECITY 2022

A UK/Ukraine programme this year will highlight and support Ukraine's cultural scene, including a restored version of the 1965 classic Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Dir: Sergei Parajanov) - pictured below - as well as the 2022 release Klondike (Dir: Maryna Er Gorbach), which won the Directing Award in the World Dramatic competition at this year’s Sundance Festival.

The Adventures in World Cinema programme includes Cannes Grand Prix winner Close on 11 November - a tender, coming-of-age drama about the deep friendship between two 13-year-olds, directed by Lukas Dhont. This contrasts with an offering like Corsage, an irreverent period biopic featuring an exhilarating performance from Vicky Krieps as an imperious Austrian empress.

There will also be a chance to see Venice Film Festival Golden Lion winner All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, an exploration of photographer Nan Goldin’s life and career, and her activism against the Sackler family’s donations to museums around the world, Berlin Golden Bear winning Catalan film Alcarras, as well as EO from veteran Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski - joint winner of this year’s Jury Prize at Cannes and Poland’s entry for next year’s Academy Awards.

For music fans, there will also be a clutch of fantastic Live Soundtrack screenings for which CINECITY is renowned. On 17 November, Asian Dub Foundation will bring their fusion of breakbeat and North African sounds to a screening of The Battle of Algiers, Gillo Pontecorvo’s 1966 masterpiece of celluloid insurrection.

To mark the centenary of the horror classic Nosferatu there's a screening on 12 November with live score performed by Elizabeth-Jane Baldry, the only silent movie harpist in the world. There will also be a talk about scoring for horror films - Savage Noises - on 17 November, featuring experts in the medium such as Sarah Angliss and Elizabeth Bernholz (aka Gazelle Twin).

CINECITY is presented by the 香蕉直播 and was co-founded in 2003 by Dr Frank Gray, who oversees the university's acclaimed and is a lecturer in its School of Art and Media. Today, Dr Gray curates and runs the festival alongside Artistic Director , a fellow lecturer in the university's School of Art and Media.
