What you can expect

Our goal is that lectures should be recorded where possible – this could be all or part of a teaching session where a lecturer makes a presentation to a group of students online on MS Teams or in person. At a minimum it will be an audio recording of the lecture.

We'll let you know if the lecture is being recorded at the start of the session.

Where it is not possible to record because of the style of the session, copyright or other reasons, we will let you know and provide alternative materials, for example annotated lecture slides.

Recordings will focus on the lecturer, session presenter and teaching resources, not the other session attendees. We want you to feel comfortable with the process of recording, and measures are in place with this in mind. If you have concerns about being recorded please speak with a member of your course team.

Getting the most out of lecture recordings

Our top tips

• Before listening to the recording, check your notes to see where you might want to add more detail – or have a think about how much you can remember on your own and what else you might need to focus or revisit.
• Pace yourself. Rewatch them over a period of time. Don’t leave them all until revision time!
• Use the recordings to keep up if you are unable to attend a lecture.
• Make the most of pausing so you can make notes or search for other resources.
• When preparing for exams, use the recording to test yourself.

Accessing recordings

How you access the recordings will depend on the way it was recorded – either on MS Teams or Panopto – but in each case the lecturer will make a link of the recording available on My Studies. This usually happens within 24 hours, but can take up to 48 hours if the recording needs to be edited.

Just to note

Recordings are not a replacement for lectures – they are an additional tool to help you in your learning. All of our students are actively encouraged to attend actual lectures.

The experience of being in a lecture is very important – and research shows attendance enhances social wellbeing and that those who attend achieve higher marks!
