The Advanced Engineering Building (AEB) is a state-of-the-art facility and home to the Advanced Engineering Centre (AEC) which has an international reputation for producing innovative, future-facing research into complex engine combustion processes and laser-based measurement techniques, fundamental modelling and computational simulation.

The building was developed with financial support from Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and the Higher Education Funding Council and in partnership with Shoreham-based Ricardo UK, the Shoreham-based global engineering, strategic and environmental consultancy and specialist manufacturer. The Wolfson Foundation have also supported the building with a £500,000 grant for state-of-the-art equipment.

The AEC works with a range of engineering companies on innovative research in partnership with the automotive industry to promote vital industrial knowledge-exchange. The AEB extends its long-term partnership with Ricardo through a dedicated combustion engine research area on the ground floor. In addition, there are cutting edge engine test cells, mechanical engineering workshops and learning spaces. As an  spoke, the Centre supports internal combustion engine thermal efficiency research and development with industry across the UK and leads on low carbon internal combustion engine thermal efficiency as the ICE Thermal Efficiency Spoke.
