The Ricardo Proteus Green is a heavy duty single cylinder diesel engine. This engine is configured as a direct injection diesel engine with a low swirl cylinder head reproducing the characteristics of an existing production engine.
This engine was originally commissioned for the EU Framework 6 GREEN project to investigate the potential trade-off of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption at future exhaust emissions limits using a flexible high pressure fuel injection system and variable rates of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). A Delphi F1 electronic unit injector was originally installed, providing up to three injections at up to 2400 bar. It has since been upgraded to the Delphi F2 ultra high pressure common rail system giving total control over injection numbers, periods and durations.
Projects on this engine aim to achieve future emission targets without after treatment, thus allowing scope for further emissions reductions.
