The university’s Grand Parade campus in central Brighton will become a huge free exhibition space, showcasing emerging talent from diverse disciplines ranging from fine art, fashion and photography to digital music and sound, graphic design and textiles.

In a new departure this year students from the university’s newly-merged School of Architecture and Design will be exhibiting their work on Hastings Pier, the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize-winning building designed by 香蕉直播 lecturer Michael Spooner.

The Graduate Show 2018 (#brightonshow2018) runs from Saturday 2 June to Sunday 10 June at the 香蕉直播 Grand Parade campus in central Brighton, and from Tuesday 5 June to Sunday 10 June at Hastings Pier.

Several of the students who will be exhibiting work in the Graduate Show have been sharing their thoughts ahead of the big event:

Dayna Murphy who is studying for a BA(Hons) Illustration, and who will be joining MTV as a Digital Media Intern after graduating said:

“I am inspired by modern digital media and my own intuitive self-expression. My visual language mixes digitally rendered illustration with physically drawn elements to mirror the close relationship we have with technology.

“I found my course to be really impactful on the way I approach illustration now. I have developed a lot as a visual communicator during my time in Brighton, being in such a creative city has been inspiring and I’m sad to be leaving it!”

PJ Davy who is studying for a BA(Hons) Digital Music and Sound said: “In my recent work, I have been concerned with the increasing digitisation of our lives, the effects of the internet on relationships, and our relationship with the internet itself. My sound and light installation Heads in The Cloud communicates these concerns using synchronised sound and a matrix of LED lights.

“After graduation, I plan to get as much work experience as possible, pushing my installation art in preparation for undertaking a Master’s degree in 2019. I’d like to expand Heads in The Cloud by creating larger scale versions for bigger spaces. I feel like it’s only on version 1.0 right now.”

Emmy Sale is studying for a BA(Hons) Fashion and Dress History and was recently the recipient of a student fellowship with the Association of Dress Historians:

“I have enjoyed every minute of my course and I think the fact that I would like to continue the subject to Masters level shows that. As active researchers, the tutors have always been inspirational and supportive of students work and their volunteering or work outside of university.

Brighton as a wonderful and cultural place, is perfect for such a course and in some modules we have explored the history of art and design in terms of Brighton and also the second-hand trade within the Lanes.

Harry Harwood is studying for a BA(Hons) Architecture:” My current project is the conversion and remodelling of three existing rows of 1970’s, prefabricated concrete, residential terrace houses to incorporate a community-based food hub that could fit into a larger productive urban landscape. At the design’s heart, is a scheme that attempts to minimise waste through reusing and playfully adapting the maximum amount of the existing concrete structures of the residential, terraced houses to prevent them going to landfill, during the regeneration.

“Soon after graduation, I hope to find an inspiring practice to help stretch and further my skill set and provide opportunities to rise to professional challenges.”
